Maria Valentina Guillen, 22, was killed in a plane crash on March 30 at Treasure Coast International Airport in Fort Pierce, the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office confirmed. Guillen, a flight instructor, was piloting a Piper PA-44 that crashed on the ramp after experiencing engine problems, according to the Federal Aviation Administration investigating the incident.
A second person on board was injured and taken to a nearby hospital; their identity and condition have not been released. Michael Leighton, a flight instructor with a nearby school, called the crash a rare event, noting the PA-44’s popularity for twin-engine training. Students mourning Guillen left flowers on her car’s windshield.
