Bus Carrying Canadian Junior Hockey Team’s Bus Crashes, Kills 16

In an international tragedy, a bus carrying a junior hockey team from the town of Humboldt, Saskatchewan in Western Canada was involved in a crash with a tractor trailer in April, killing sixteen passengers on the bus.  The athletes were members of a junior league team that was traveling to a playoff game.  Twenty-nine people were aboard the bus, including the driver, and sixteen were killed while the remaining thirteen passengers were injured.

Among the dead were more than ten of the team’s players as well as its long-time coach, play-by-play announcer, volunteer statistician and the bus driver.   Although the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) are still investigating the circumstances of the accident, they nevertheless advised that the tractor-trailer would have had to yield to a stop sign before crossing over the highway that the hockey bus was traveling on.

The accident has even led the province of Saskatchewan to make plans to hire a consulting firm to conduct a safety assessment of the intersection near where the accident occurred once the RCMP investigation is complete.

Florida Lawsuits involving Bus Accidents

Although this incident took place in Canada, bus accidents are more common than many people realize, particularly in Florida and throughout the United States.  Bus accidents can result in catastrophic injuries or death while others result in property damage and minor injuries.  Lawsuits involving bus accidents claims can be unlike other motor vehicle accidents because you must deal with large corporations or government entities who own the bus. In some cases, you may also be required to deal with special state and federal laws applicable to buses. For this reason, you want a personal injury attorney who has extensive experience representing bus accident victims.

The experienced bus accident attorneys at Lytal Reiter have been involved in some of the most high profile bus accident cases nationwide in recent years.  For instance, our firm represented the family of Aaron Beauchamp, a 10 year old who was killed in a bus accident involving a negligent bus driver in Port St. Lucie in 2012 who turned directly into the path of an industrial truck that was carrying sod and caused an accident that killed Aaron and injured 14 other children.
