The statistics reflecting incidents of abuse involving elderly residents in nursing homes and care facilities are both staggering and disheartening. At the broadest level, more than two (2) million cases of elder abuse are reported every year, and almost one (1) out of every ten (10) elderly individuals will experience some form of elder abuse. Moreover, virtually all parties working closely with the elderly on topics such as nursing home abuse have noted that the overwhelming majority of abuse incidents remain unreported.

So now the question is with these facilities off limits to family and friends, how do we know what is happing to our loved ones?

If you have a loved one in a facility, you need to do more than just call and ask if everything is alright.  Tell them you want to schedule a video face to face conference with your loved one or if they have a cellphone tell them you want them to assist the resident with a facetime call.  These extra steps will help bring you and them closer together and they will be able to hopefully communicate to you how they are being treated.
