In the early hours of February 11, North Port police pursued 25-year-old Merald Onyemaechi, suspected of driving under the influence. Onyemaechi, a convicted felon on probation for home invasion robbery with a weapon, fled when officers attempted a traffic stop. The chase ended when Onyemaechi’s vehicle crashed into a home on Lakeshore Circle in Charlotte County. He fled on foot but was apprehended on U.S. Highway 41. The home’s garage and screening sustained minor damage, and a resident’s truck was also struck. A firearm and ammunition were recovered from Onyemaechi’s abandoned vehicle.
Onyemaechi faces multiple charges, including driving with a suspended license, obstruction without violence, fleeing to elude, DUI with property damage, and possession of a firearm by a felon.
