Fort Myers Police are intensifying patrols on the Edison Bridge in Downtown Fort Myers, quickly catching multiple speeders in just minutes. During a Wednesday night ride-along, Officer Ryan Hernandez-Byner cited several drivers exceeding posted speed limits.
Speed limit signs clearly mark 45 mph approaching the bridge and 35 mph closer to downtown. Within 20 minutes of surveillance, three drivers were clocked speeding—two at 64 and 67 mph in the 35 mph zone, and one at 73 mph in the 45 mph zone. That last driver asked for a warning but was issued a citation.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, speeding was a factor in 28% of fatal U.S. crashes in 2023, contributing to 11,775 deaths.
“We’re out here doing what we need to do,” said Officer Hernandez-Byner. “We want people to do the same.”
