On August 12, 2025, state troopers responded to a deadly crash on Florida’s Turnpike in St. Lucie County, involving a minivan and a commercial semi-truck with trailer. According to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV), the truck driver, Harjinder Singh, recklessly attempted a U-turn at an unauthorized location, endangering others on the roadway. As a result of his actions, three occupants of the minivan were killed.
Florida State Troopers secured an arrest warrant, charging Singh with three counts of vehicular homicide. Their investigation revealed that he had entered the United States illegally in 2018, after crossing the Mexico border, and obtained a Commercial Driver’s License in California. With the support of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), troopers issued an immigration detainer under the 287(g) program.
FLHSMV Executive Director Dave Kerner strongly condemned Singh’s actions as “both shocking and criminal,” noting that while “three people lost their lives as a result of his recklessness, countless friends and family members will experience the pain of their loss forever.” Singh remains in custody on charges of vehicular homicide and immigration violations, and will be deported at the conclusion of his state legal proceedings.
