A fatal crash early Monday morning shut down the on-ramp to Interstate 95 South at Palmetto Park Road in Boca Raton, causing significant delays for commuters. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the accident happened around 2:45 a.m. near mile marker 42, close to the Broward County line.
Troopers said a Toyota Corolla was disabled and parked in the outside lane of southbound I-95 following an earlier incident. The driver, a 62-year-old man from Miami, was standing in the roadway when a Mercedes van collided with the back of the parked vehicle. The impact pushed the Corolla forward, striking the man. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The crash forced authorities to close the on-ramp for more than five hours while investigators processed the scene and cleared the wreckage. The ramp reopened later in the morning, but the closure caused heavy backups for early drivers heading south through Boca Raton.
Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the cause of the crash and has not released the identity of the victim pending notification of family.
