In the early hours of Sunday morning, a tragic head-on collision occurred on U.S. Highway 27 near mile marker 85, just east of the Hendry County line in Palm Beach County. According to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, a Ford van traveling northbound in the southbound lane collided with a southbound Chevrolet Suburban at approximately 2:35 a.m.
Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Suburban has been identified as 24-year-old Damion Jones of South Bay. The identity of the Ford van driver has not been released. Three passengers from the Suburban were transported to St. Mary’s Medical Center; two are in serious condition, and one is in critical condition.
Authorities do not believe that drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash. The incident caused significant traffic delays in the area as investigators worked to clear the scene and determine the cause of the wrong-way driving.
