Providing Attorney Representation in Florida Since 1985

One of the most serious mistakes anyone, including a parent, can make when operating an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) is to treat the ATV as if it is a toy. ATVs are not toys. They are motorist vehicles that must be treated with the same respect that you give a car, truck, or motorcycle. Simply because ATVs are not permitted for use on roads and highways does not mean ATVs do not cause serious injuries and deaths.

From 1982 through 2011, 485 people died in ATV accidents in Florida alone putting Florida in the top 10 states for ATV deaths in the United States. When an ATV accidents happen, most people assume that the crash was due to driver error. While driver error does account for a substantial number of ATV deaths each year, defects in the design and manufacturing errors also account for a significant number of ATV deaths each year. ATV Safety Tips To Keep You And Your Family Safe

ATV safety should be a top priority for every parent and anyone who operates an all-terrain vehicle. Some important ATV safety tips that you should follow include:

  • Always wear helmets and other protective gear (i.e. eye protection, gloves, long pants, boots, etc.) when riding an ATV
  • Read the owner’s manual thoroughly before operating the ATV
  • Take a hands-on ATV safety course
  • Never carry passengers on an ATV designed for single riders
  • Do not operate ATVs on highways, streets, or paved roads
  • Always be aware of the rollover risk associated with ATVs
  • Register your ATV as soon as you purchase it so that you will be included in any safety recalls
  • Follow the safety recalls for ATVs at Recalls.Gov
  • Do not allow children under the age of 16 to ride an adult ATV or drive an ATV
  • Never operate an ATV while under the influence of alcohol or drugs

You can review more ATV safety tips by visiting the ATV Safety Information Center of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. By treating an ATV with respect as a potentially dangerous motorized vehicle, you can reduce your risk of being injured in an ATV accident. Call A West Palm Beach ATV Accidents Attorney.
