Some people follow stop sign laws to a T, letting their vehicle come to a stop for several seconds before proceeding. Others treat these red octagons as mere guidelines and either stop very briefly before looking both ways or roll through the sign altogether.
Unfortunately, one man’s decision to drive through a stop sign ended in tragedy. On February 25, the 33-year-old from Fort Pierce was heading north on Header Canal Road in his Dodge SUV.
For whatever reason, the driver failed to stop at a stop sign and continued to travel across Orange Avenue.
The SUV did not come to a stop there either. It continued on to the grass shoulder when it smacked into a guardrail. The impact caused the vehicle to catapult into the air over the canal.
The man was pronounced dead by St. Lucie Fire Rescue shortly after 7 a.m. There were no other passengers in his car at the time of the accident, and there were no other cars involved in the incident.
The accident closed down the intersection of Orange Avenue and South Header Canal Road that morning, reopening five hours after the incident took place.
At this stage of the investigation, it’s unclear whether foreign substances played a role in the crash. The identity of the man has also not been revealed at this time.
