Product recalls can happen when defective consumer goods put people at risk of serious injury or property damage. Product recall lawsuits may become an option for consumers harmed by dangerous products, including defective appliances that create fire hazards. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Galanz Americas Limited Company have announced a recall of Galanz Retro Refrigerators after reports of fires involving the units, including one incident that resulted in a fatality.
The recall affects approximately 121,680 refrigerators sold nationwide at Home Depot stores and online through Amazon.com. Consumers who own one of these refrigerators are urged to stop using the product immediately and contact Galanz for a free repair.
Galanz Refrigerator Recall Details
The recalled refrigerators were manufactured by Zhongshan Galanz in China and imported by Home Depot and Galanz Americas. The retro-style refrigerators were sold between January 2019 and September 2022 for approximately $330 to $520.
The affected refrigerators were available in several colors, including black, blue, red, and white. They measure approximately 58 inches high, 24 inches deep, and 21 inches wide, with a 7.6 cubic-foot capacity.
The recalled models include:
- BCD-215V-62H
- GLR76TRDER
- GLR76TBKER
- GLR76TBEER
- GLR76TWEER
Only refrigerators with date codes between December 2018 and December 2020 are included in the recall. Consumers can find the model number and date code on a white label located in the upper-left corner on the back of the refrigerator.
Fires Reported Involving Recalled Refrigerators
According to the CPSC, there have been 34 reported fires involving these Galanz Retro Refrigerators. One of those fires resulted in a fatality, based on a local fire department report.
When an appliance defect creates a fire risk, the consequences can extend beyond property damage. A defective refrigerator can potentially cause severe burns, smoke inhalation injuries, or other life-threatening harm. Families affected by dangerous products may need to understand whether they have legal options for recovering compensation.
What Consumers Should Do After the Recall
Consumers who own a recalled Galanz refrigerator should unplug the appliance and stop using it until it has been repaired. Galanz is offering free in-home repairs performed by qualified technicians.
Anyone who experienced a fire, injury, or significant property damage related to one of these refrigerators should document what happened, preserve the appliance if possible, and keep records of expenses or losses connected to the incident.
How Product Liability Claims Can Help Injured Consumers
Manufacturers and companies involved in distributing consumer products have a responsibility to ensure their products are reasonably safe. When a defective product causes harm, injured consumers may be able to pursue compensation through a product liability claim.
Product recall lawsuits can help hold companies accountable when dangerous defects lead to injuries, deaths, or financial losses. An experienced personal injury attorney can investigate the cause of the incident, gather evidence, and help determine the best path forward.
