-As Toyota races to repair millions of recalled vehicles for problems including gas pedals, floor mats and brakes, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is also taking heat for not catching the problem sooner and/or looking the other way and Honda is expanding its own safety-related recall.
-This week, a former head of NHTSA criticized the organization's investigation into Toyota.
-The New York Times has reported that "not once in more than six years of reviews of Toyota's problems did officials at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which regulates automakers, use their power to subpoena Toyota's records, even though they said they believed the automaker was withholding critical information."
-US Congressional hearings have been scheduled to further investigate the handling of the Toyota recall situation.
